WHAT'S NEW

Decarbonisation of shipping, but not at the expense of safety

The journey towards shipping decarbonizing presents significant technological and economic challenges. However, amidst discussions on sustainability, safety must not be sidelined. The integration of climate-friendly technologies brings new safety considerations, such as fuel handling risks and infrastructure adaptation. Neglecting safety protocols could have dire consequences. Therefore, prioritizing safety alongside decarbonization efforts is crucial to ensure the well-being of both maritime personnel and the environment.

EMSA

It’s an agency of the European Union (EU) established to provide technical, operational, and scientific assistance to EU member states and the European Commission in the field of maritime safety, pollution prevention, and maritime security. EMSA’s activities include monitoring, training, data collection, and coordination of response to maritime accidents and pollution incidents in European waters. The agency plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of maritime transportation within the EU.

Fuels

Ships contribute to air pollution through emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and greenhouse gases. To mitigate this impact:

1. Use cleaner fuels like low-sulfur marine fuels or LNG.

2. Install exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers).

3. Adopt energy-efficient technologies.

4. Enforce regulatory measures such as SECAs and MARPOL Annex VI.

5. Promote sustainable shipping practices like slow steaming and port electrification.

6. Invest in research and development for cleaner fuels and alternative propulsion technologies.

These actions can help reduce the environmental impact of the shipping industry.
